Getting Ready at Nooitgedacht

The wedding day began with preparations surrounded by the old-world interiors of the estate. These quieter parts of a wedding are always some of our favourites to photograph. While the final details are coming together, there is a mixture of anticipation, nerves and excitement that disappears as soon as the celebrations begin.

Ayah chose an elegant strapless wedding gown with beautiful textured detailing, paired with a long veil. Louay kept things classic in black tie, creating a timeless look that suited the surroundings perfectly.

The historic rooms, antique mirrors and traditional architecture at Nooitgedacht gave us a beautiful backdrop for these early photographs before everyone moved outside to join the celebrations.

A Stellenbosch Winelands Celebration

One of the strengths of having a wedding at Nooitgedacht is the variety the estate offers. Gardens, lawns, enormous trees, Cape Dutch buildings and beautiful outdoor areas all sit within a relatively compact space, allowing completely different parts of the wedding to flow naturally from one to the next.

For Ayah and Louay, the afternoon had a particularly festive atmosphere. Guests gathered outdoors beneath the trees, drinks in hand, before energetic drumming and dancing brought everyone together.

It created some fantastic documentary wedding photographs. Rather than carefully posed moments, these are the pictures that show what it actually felt like to be there — people laughing, dancing, hugging and joining in with the celebration.

There was no shortage of personality either. Oversized lettering featuring the couple’s names became a fun focal point in front of Nooitgedacht’s famous manor house and made for one particularly memorable group photograph with their guests.

Elegant Wedding Décor and Candlelight

As the evening progressed, the styling became warmer and more intimate.

Natural timber tables were dressed with glassware, candles and delicate orchids, while chandeliers and candlelight gave the reception an elegant glow. The combination worked particularly well with the historical character of the venue — sophisticated without losing the relaxed feeling of a Winelands wedding.

There were also comfortable lounge areas outside, using vintage-style furniture, hanging floral details, lanterns and strings of lights. These spaces allowed guests to move easily between the reception and the gardens as the evening progressed.

The speeches and dinner were filled with laughter and emotion, with Ayah and Louay surrounded by their friends and family as everyone settled into the evening celebrations.

The Outdoor Dance Floor at Nooitgedacht

And then came one of our favourite features of this wedding.

Instead of keeping the party completely indoors, Ayah and Louay had their dance floor outside.

A large dance floor was positioned beneath the trees, with exposed hanging bulbs suspended overhead. As darkness fell, the surrounding trees, historic buildings and warm lighting transformed the area into an incredible open-air party space.

It is a brilliant example of how a Nooitgedacht wedding in Stellenbosch can make use of both the indoor and outdoor areas of the estate. Dinner could retain the elegance of a formal reception while the party afterwards had a completely different energy.

Once the dancing started, there was very little holding this crowd back. The evening developed into a lively celebration, with Ayah and Louay surrounded by friends and family underneath the lights.

Wedding Photography at Nooitgedacht Estate

We have photographed many weddings at Nooitgedacht over the years, and every couple seems to use the venue differently. Ayah and Louay’s wedding stands out because of the way the sophisticated styling and black-tie feel of the celebration contrasted with such a relaxed and energetic outdoor party.
