What does wedding photography cost in Cape Town
Wedding photography prices in Cape Town vary enormously. Couples can find shorter or entry-level wedding coverage from around R8,000–R15,000, while experienced professional wedding photographers commonly charge around R15,000–R35,000 for more comprehensive wedding-day coverage. Premium photographers, larger teams, longer coverage and high-end collections can cost R40,000–R60,000 or more.
The important thing is that price alone doesn't tell you what you're buying.
Two photographers might both advertise an eight-hour wedding package, but one could include one photographer and digital photographs only, while another includes two photographers, considerably more coverage of simultaneous events, an engagement session, an album and other services.
What determines the price of wedding photography?
Some of the biggest factors are:
- Number of hours
- One or two photographers
- Experience of the photographer
- Size and complexity of the wedding
- Number of locations
- Travelling between locations
- Bride and groom preparation coverage
- Albums and engagement sessions
- Additional editing and deliverables
At ZaraZoo, we believe the wedding timeline should determine the amount of coverage, rather than asking a couple to arbitrarily choose six, eight or ten hours.
For most traditional weddings, eight hours is a sensible starting point. Some intimate weddings genuinely only need six hours. A larger wedding involving separate preparations, a church ceremony, travelling and extensive reception coverage may need ten hours or more.
Our approach is therefore to first understand your wedding and then recommend the appropriate collection.
How much does wedding videography cost in Cape Town?
Wedding videography prices in Cape Town also vary considerably. Shorter or simpler coverage can start below R10,000, while professional full wedding-day film packages frequently fall somewhere around R12,000–R30,000+. Premium productions involving multiple videographers, longer coverage, multiple cameras, professional audio and additional finished films can cost considerably more.
But comparing wedding videography purely according to price can be misleading.
A package described as “8 hours of wedding videography” might mean one videographer producing a short highlight film.
Another eight-hour collection could involve two videographers, multiple camera angles, professional audio recording, a highlight film, ceremony coverage, speeches and drone footage.
Those are very different products.
What affects wedding videography prices?
Important factors include:
- Hours of filming
- One or two videographers
- Number of cameras
- Professional audio recording
- Highlight-film length
- Ceremony coverage
- Speeches
- Drone footage
- Social-media films
- Editing and post-production
Video also involves a considerable amount of work after the wedding. The footage needs to be reviewed, selected, edited, colour-treated, sound mixed and crafted into a coherent story.
And sound is one of the fundamental reasons to have your wedding filmed.
A photograph can preserve the expression on someone's face during a speech.
A wedding film can preserve their voice, the words they said and everyone's reaction to them.
That's why we see photography and film as two very different ways of preserving the same wedding story.
How many hours of wedding photography do we need?
For most traditional weddings, around eight hours is a good starting point.
But there isn't a magic number.
We've photographed enough weddings over the years to know that the right amount of coverage depends on the actual timeline.
Consider a wedding with a 15:30 ceremony.
If you want proper preparation photographs, we may need to start around 12:30 or 13:00.
Then you have:
Preparations → Ceremony → Confetti → Congratulations → Family photographs → Bridal party → Couple session → Reception → Speeches → First dance.
Eight hours suddenly doesn't sound particularly long.
A useful general guideline is:

We therefore prefer couples to tell us what they want photographed, and then we work backwards to determine when we need to arrive.
Is six hours enough for wedding photography?
Yes, sometimes.
Six hours can work very well for an intimate or uncomplicated wedding, particularly when everything happens at one venue.
It can be suitable when:
- The guest list is relatively small
- Preparations are limited
- Ceremony and reception are at the same venue
- Little or no travelling is required
- The couple doesn't require extensive reception coverage
- The celebration itself is relatively short
Where six hours becomes problematic is when a couple expects it to cover an entire traditional wedding day.
If you want:
Bride and groom preparations + ceremony + confetti + family photographs + couple session + reception + speeches + first dance + party
trying to squeeze all of that into six hours usually means compromising somewhere.
We therefore see six hours as focused wedding coverage, rather than compressed full-day coverage.

Does travelling between our church and reception venue count as coverage time?
Yes. Absolutely.
This is one of the easiest things to overlook when choosing a wedding photography package.
If you've booked eight consecutive hours and it takes 30 minutes to travel from your church to your reception venue, that journey happens inside your eight hours.
And it's rarely just the driving time.
The photography and video team may need to:
Pack equipment → get to their vehicles → travel → park → unload equipment → find the correct reception area → get back into position.
That can easily consume 30–45 minutes.
This can materially change the package you need.
For example:
Wedding A
Bride prepares at wine estate
Groom prepares at same estate
Ceremony at estate
Reception at estate
Almost no photographic time is lost to travelling.
Wedding B
Bride prepares at hotel
Groom prepares elsewhere
Ceremony at church
Reception 30 minutes away
Those weddings might have exactly the same number of guests and ceremony time, but Wedding B can require substantially more coverage.
This is why location and travel form part of the ZaraZoo package recommendation process.
We don't want to discover halfway through the wedding that the package didn't allow enough time for the day you actually planned.
Do we need two wedding photographers?
Not every wedding needs two photographers.
A good, experienced wedding photographer can cover many weddings extremely well alone.
But there are circumstances where a second photographer adds considerable value.
We would consider two photographers when:
- Bride and groom preparations happen separately
- The wedding is large
- There is a large bridal party
- There are many guests
- There are extensive family photographs
- Several important things happen simultaneously
- The couple wants comprehensive candid guest coverage
The real advantage is being in two places at once.
This is something couples sometimes overlook.
After the ceremony, the main photographer usually takes the bride and groom away for their couple session.
But what's happening back at the reception?
Your guests are having canapés.
They're drinking champagne.
Old friends are seeing one another.
Families are talking.
People are laughing.
Children are playing.
The décor and reception space are ready before everyone sits down.
With one photographer, we have to choose where to be.
With two, the lead photographer can concentrate completely on creating beautiful couple portraits while the second photographer remains behind documenting the wedding that's continuing without you.
The second photographer can also capture additional family groups and candid guest photographs.
So we don't think the question should simply be:
“Will two photographers give us more photos?”
The better question is:
“Are there important parts of our wedding happening at the same time?”
If the answer is yes, a second photographer can make a substantial difference.
Should we book wedding photography and videography together?
If you love both the photography and filmmaking style of the same company, there are significant advantages to booking photography and videography together.
And the biggest advantage isn't necessarily price.
It's coordination.
Your photographer and videographer need to document exactly the same moments:
- Walking down the aisle
- First kiss
- Confetti
- Couple session
- Cake cutting
- Speeches
- First dance
None of those moments can simply be repeated because one camera didn't get the shot.
Consider the confetti photograph.
The couple walks towards the cameras while the guests throw confetti.
The photographer wants to stand in the best possible position.
So does the videographer.
If they're working independently and aren't communicating, the photographer can step directly into the videographer's frame — or the videographer into the photographer's photograph.
Neither is necessarily being inconsiderate. They're both trying to capture the same important moment.
A team that regularly works together develops an instinct for this.
Before we move, we check where the other person is.
We understand what they're trying to capture and how they work.
The couple session also becomes much easier.
Photography often needs moments of stillness.
Film often benefits from movement.
When two teams work independently, the couple can end up feeling as though they're doing everything twice:
“Now do that for photography.”
“Great. Now can we do it again for video?”

Choosing the Right Wedding Photography & Videography Coverage
Every wedding is different, which is why choosing the right wedding photography and videography package should be based on more than price alone. Your ceremony time, number of guests, preparation locations, travel between your ceremony and reception, and how far into the celebrations you'd like covered can all influence how many hours and photographers or videographers you need.
