Getting married in Cape Town: start here

Getting married in Cape Town, South Africa brings together a wedding celebration and a journey: ocean views, mountain scenery, wine-estate gardens and time away with the people you love. For couples travelling from the UK, Europe, the United States, the Middle East or elsewhere, the attraction is often more than the ceremony. It is the chance to share a destination, then stay on for a honeymoon.

This guide helps you turn that idea into a workable plan. Explore Cape Town and the Cape Winelands, compare seasons and costs, understand the questions to ask about a legal marriage, and find advice for booking suppliers from abroad. Throughout the guide, we link to real ZaraZoo weddings and our more detailed planning articles.

1. Why choose Cape Town for a destination wedding?

You can choose between the coast, the city and the Cape Winelands, with distinctly different settings for your photographs and celebration. A wine-estate wedding in Stellenbosch feels different from an intimate hotel wedding in Franschhoek or a ceremony near the ocean.

Food, wine and scenery can become part of the guest experience. A welcome dinner lets families meet before the wedding; a relaxed lunch afterwards gives you more time together. You can spend part of your stay in Cape Town and part in the Winelands without turning the wedding day into a sightseeing trip.

There are trade-offs. International flights cost money, not everyone can take a long holiday, and planning across time zones needs clear communication. Exchange rates may make some local services attractive, but travel, accommodation and multiple events can outweigh those savings. Choose the destination because it suits your celebration, then test the complete budget.

ZaraZoo has photographed weddings since 2003. Our Cape Town wedding photography portfolio and wedding video portfolio show celebrations across local venues, helping you picture the atmosphere and the kind of story you want to keep.

2. Choose your setting: Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

Before comparing venues, decide on the feeling of the wedding, your likely guest count and where everyone will stay. A striking view is only one part of the decision: privacy, indoor alternatives, transport and accommodation matter just as much.

Compare destination wedding settings
Area What to consider Questions to ask
Cape Town city and Atlantic coast Hotels, ocean views and a city-based guest itinerary. How sheltered is the ceremony? How will guests travel between their hotels and the venue?
Stellenbosch Wine estates, gardens, vineyards and mountain backdrops. Is accommodation available on site or nearby? Does the indoor option suit the full guest list?
Franschhoek Country hotels, estates and an intimate wedding or extended stay. Is there a minimum stay or exclusive-use requirement? What is included in the venue quote?
Paarl and surrounding Winelands A wider choice of estate and countryside settings. What are the real transfer times? Can ceremony, portraits and reception happen in one place?
Wider South Africa Safari or Garden Route celebrations and honeymoon extensions. Are extra flights, overnight stops or supplier travel needed? Is the regional weather suitable?

Start with our Cape Town and Cape Winelands venue reviews. Explore Molenvliet, Cavalli Estate, Vrede en Lust, Webersburg and La Residence to compare actual settings and wedding photographs.

For a beach ceremony or portraits in a public location, confirm permissions, professional photography requirements and a sheltered alternative with the relevant venue or land manager. A public beach does not guarantee privacy or unrestricted event access.

3. When is the best time to get married in Cape Town?

Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate, with generally warm, dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. Conditions vary between the coast and inland valleys, and summer wind can affect outdoor ceremonies. There is no month that guarantees perfect weather.

Our planning recommendation: if an outdoor celebration is your priority, begin by comparing dates from November to March, then weigh availability, heat, wind and travel costs. Spring and autumn can be appealing alternatives; winter suits couples who love an indoor setting and accept a greater chance of rain.

Seasonal considerations for your wedding
Season Appeal Plan around
Spring · September–November Gardens and fresh seasonal scenery. Changeable conditions; keep a rain and wind alternative.
Summer · December–February Long evenings and generally dry weather. Heat, strong wind and holiday demand; plan shade and comfortable guest transport.
Autumn · March–May A transition in the vineyards and a different colour palette. Shorter days and increasing rain risk as winter approaches.
Winter · June–August Indoor celebrations and a quieter atmosphere at some venues. Wet-weather arrangements, warmth and an earlier portrait session; ask about actual seasonal rates.

Discuss ceremony time with your photographer before sending invitations. Mountain ridges and buildings can hide the sun before the published sunset time. Our elopement guide’s monthly rainfall and daylight table is a useful starting point, followed by a check for your exact date and venue.

4. What does a destination wedding in Cape Town cost?

There is no useful single price for a Cape Town wedding. Guest numbers, venue, season, number of events and what you include in “the wedding budget” change the total substantially. Build your budget from written quotes rather than relying on an old price range or a promise that South Africa is automatically cheaper.

  • The celebration: venue hire or minimum spend, catering, drinks, décor, flowers, furniture, sound and entertainment.
  • Your suppliers: planner, marriage officer or celebrant, photography, video, hair and make-up, and any supplier travel or accommodation.
  • The trip: international flights, accommodation, airport transfers, guest shuttles and honeymoon travel.
  • The extras: welcome dinner, farewell lunch, outfits, stationery, location permissions, albums and additional coverage.
  • A contingency: currency changes, payment charges and adjustments to the plan.

Ask each venue what its package includes and what attracts a separate charge. Check whether tax, staffing, cleaning, overtime, corkage and outside-supplier fees are included. A low headline venue fee may sit alongside a substantial catering minimum or accommodation commitment.

Paying suppliers from overseas

Quotes are commonly expressed in South African rand (ZAR); confirm the currency and quote validity with each supplier. Compare the final amount charged by your payment provider, including conversion and transfer fees. Put deposits, balance dates, cancellation and postponement terms in the contract. Verify bank details through a known contact before making a transfer, especially if a payment instruction changes.

Our wedding photography and video packages give you a starting point for creative coverage. Ask for a written quote confirming hours, team size, deliverables, extras and any travel costs. Photography and video coverage does not include your venue, planner, flights or accommodation.

Plan the coverage around your celebration

A ceremony for two, a full wedding day and a weekend of events need different coverage. Tell us which moments matter and we can discuss the photography and video options.

5. How to plan a Cape Town wedding from overseas

Start with three decisions: your approximate guest count, your complete budget and two or three possible dates. Shortlist venues that suit all three. Request a video walkthrough, a current quote and a floor plan; ask to see the indoor alternative as carefully as the outdoor ceremony space.

A local planner can manage supplier selection, budgets, guest logistics and the wedding programme. The strongest reason to hire one from abroad is having someone locally accountable for the moving parts. The trade-off is the additional fee: a straightforward wedding at a venue with substantial coordination may need less support than a multi-day celebration spread across locations.

Clarify whether a venue coordinator looks after venue operations only or manages your entire supplier team. Agree who makes the weather decision, manages setup, handles guest transport and responds when plans change.

From our Advice and Planning section: choosing a planner

Our Trunk Events review looks at weddings ZaraZoo photographed and filmed at Cavalli, Molenvliet and Webersburg. One recurring lesson is that a realistic programme and clear supplier communication give you time to enjoy your guests and your portraits.

Also explore our The Event Planners review when building your shortlist. Confirm current services, availability and fees directly with the planners.

Make remote booking easier

  • Use one shared planning document for contacts, contracts, payments and the latest schedule.
  • Arrange video meetings and confirm which time zone the appointment uses.
  • Ask who will actually photograph and film the wedding, and review their work.
  • Agree what is included in writing, including delivery expectations and changes to the date.
  • Keep time in your arrival schedule for venue checks, outfit adjustments and final meetings.

6. Can foreigners legally get married in South Africa?

Foreign couples can arrange a legal marriage in South Africa, subject to the applicable law and their individual circumstances. Another option is to complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. A symbolic celebration does not itself create a legal marriage.

For a legal wedding, contact an authorised marriage officer early and request a written checklist tailored to both partners’ nationalities, residence and previous marital status. Do this before booking travel around an assumed paperwork timetable.

  • Confirm passports, lawful entry and any additional documents or declarations needed for your circumstances.
  • Ask about evidence of marital status, previous marriages and translations where applicable.
  • Confirm witness arrangements and whether the proposed ceremony location is legally suitable.
  • Ask who registers the marriage, which certificate is issued and how further certificates are obtained.
  • Check with the relevant authorities at home whether recognition, an apostille, legalisation or translation is required.
  • If you want a particular marital property arrangement, obtain qualified legal advice before the ceremony.

The South African High Commission’s guidance for foreign couples provides an official starting point. Confirm the current checklist with your marriage officer and the South African mission serving your country; requirements, fees and processing times should not be assumed from a general article.

If your main goal is a relaxed destination celebration, discuss a symbolic ceremony as an option. It lets you keep the travel experience and vows here while handling the legal process separately. Our elopement guide explores that choice for smaller celebrations.

7. Flights, accommodation and guest travel

Book around Cape Town International Airport and compare current routes for your departure city. Direct flights, connections and schedules vary; allow a practical buffer before the wedding rather than arriving on the day. We recommend several days where your itinerary allows, especially if you need meetings, fittings or paperwork appointments.

Help guests choose where to stay

Give guests a clear accommodation plan before they book. If the wedding is in the Winelands, staying nearby can be more comfortable than returning to Cape Town late at night. Offer choices at different price points and confirm booking deadlines, minimum stays, accessibility and cancellation terms.

Arrange airport transfers and wedding shuttles where needed. Do not assume a car will be available on demand for every guest after a rural reception. Put pickup points, departure times and a local contact number in the guest information.

Entry requirements and practical travel information

Each traveller should check passport, visa and entry requirements with the official South African authorities or the South African mission serving their country. Requirements depend on nationality and circumstances, including travel with children. Check current rules before paying for non-refundable travel.

For safety, use reputable transport, follow local advice about routes and areas, keep valuables secure and avoid unfamiliar isolated places after dark. Give guests useful local contacts and the accommodation address. Read Cape Town Tourism’s visitor safety advice, and ask guests to consult their own government’s current travel guidance.

Share a short guest guide covering dress code, outdoor surfaces, weather layers, transport, dietary requirements and which events are hosted. Discuss menus with your caterer early if you need particular cultural, religious or dietary arrangements.

8. Photography, video and a wedding day that flows

Your photographs and wedding video will bring the destination home with you. They also let friends and family who could not travel share the vows, speeches and atmosphere. Choose a team whose complete wedding stories you like, then agree how coverage fits the day.

Think beyond a few sunset portraits. Preparations, the ceremony, family groups, drinks, speeches and dancing each need time. If you are holding a welcome event or a second ceremony, request separate coverage rather than assuming it fits into the wedding-day hours.

  • Before the ceremony: leave breathing room for final preparations, travel and any first look.
  • After the ceremony: organise a short family-photo list and nominate someone who knows the guests.
  • For couple portraits: protect a suitable light window, with nearby locations and a weather alternative.
  • For the reception: agree whether speeches, first dance and late-night moments fall within booked coverage.
  • For video: discuss ceremony and speech audio, final deliverables and whether drone footage is included and feasible.

10. Turn the wedding into a relaxed stay

Keep the wedding day focused, then give yourselves time to enjoy the destination. Cape Town’s coastal scenery and Table Mountain, the restaurants and estates of the Winelands, and a wider South African honeymoon can all form part of the trip. Check current opening hours, bookings and weather conditions for each activity.

A simple wedding-weekend outline

  • Arrival days: settle into accommodation, meet suppliers and leave time for travel delays.
  • Before the wedding: host an optional welcome dinner without filling every guest’s day.
  • Wedding day: keep ceremony, portraits and reception close together where possible.
  • The following day: an informal lunch or a free day gives everyone space to recover.
  • Honeymoon: move on to the coast, the Winelands or a separately planned safari or Garden Route stay.

South Africa is a large country; a safari in another region may require additional flights and accommodation. Check the specific destination’s travel and health requirements instead of treating every safari as a short Cape Town excursion.

When choosing food and drink for your celebration, ask for a menu that reflects your tastes and makes guests feel welcome. A local wine selection, a shared meal or a relaxed braai can be part of the experience without creating an overfull programme.

After the trip: keep the story somewhere you can revisit

Cape Town destination wedding questions

Can we plan everything without visiting first?

Remote planning is possible using video meetings, venue walkthroughs and written contracts. A local planner can be particularly useful when you have several events or guest accommodation to coordinate. Make time for final checks after arrival.

Is a Cape Town wedding cheaper than a wedding at home?

It may be for some couples, but it is not guaranteed. Compare the full cost in your home currency, including flights, accommodation, transfers and additional events. Obtain current quotes for the same guest count and standard of service.

Can we have a beach ceremony and a Winelands reception?

It can be planned, but travel and permissions add complexity. Check realistic transfer times, the legal ceremony arrangements, location access and the weather alternative before committing. A separate coastal couple session may be easier.

Do we need a wedding planner?

That depends on complexity and the support your venue provides. A planner can be valuable for overseas couples; a simple venue-based celebration may need less support. Confirm responsibilities rather than relying on a job title.

Can we book only photography or only video?

Yes. Explore our photography, video and combined packages, then enquire about the coverage that suits your plans.

Can you cover a welcome event or a separate couple shoot?

Tell us what you have in mind and we can discuss availability and a quote. Additional days or sessions need to be agreed explicitly. Our dedicated elopement offer has its own coverage structure.

Does ZaraZoo arrange the venue, travel and legal ceremony?

Our service is wedding photography and video. Your venue, planning, accommodation, travel and legal ceremony are arranged separately with the relevant providers. We can discuss your photo and video timeline alongside your planner.

What should we send with an enquiry?

Your date or preferred month, venue or area, approximate guest numbers, where you are travelling from, and whether you want photography, video or both. Include any welcome event, cultural ceremony or separate shoot you would like covered.
