Eloping to Cape Town: A South Africa & Cape Winelands Wedding Guide
Planning to elope to South Africa? Explore Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek through real elopement stories, practical planning advice and photography and video packages with six wedding hours plus a separate two-hour couple shoot.
Eloping to Cape Town, South Africa
A private ceremony overlooking the mountains, portraits among the vines and dinner for two: an elopement in Cape Town or the Cape Winelands can be a wedding and the start of a honeymoon in one trip. Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer a different atmosphere from the coast, while remaining part of a Cape Town destination wedding itinerary.
An elopement usually centres on the two of you, sometimes with a few loved ones. An intimate wedding has a small guest list and more of a shared celebration. Both deserve thoughtful planning, beautiful photographs and time to enjoy the occasion.
This guide brings together our experience photographing Cape Winelands elopements and practical advice for couples planning from overseas. Our elopement photography and video offer includes six hours of wedding coverage plus a separate two-hour couple shoot in Cape Town or the Cape Winelands.
1. Choose Cape Town, Stellenbosch or Franschhoek
Cape Town: choose the city and coast if ocean views, mountain scenery and a varied honeymoon itinerary appeal to you. Keep your ceremony close to your accommodation and leave a more ambitious portrait route for the separate couple shoot.
Stellenbosch: wine estates, gardens and mountain backdrops suit couples who want a countryside celebration with restaurants and accommodation nearby. Ask whether your chosen estate hosts a ceremony for two rather than assuming its large-wedding facilities are available for elopements.
Franschhoek: consider this part of the Cape Winelands for a private hotel or estate wedding followed by a relaxed dinner. Rod and Linda chose La Residence; Jim and Sarah eloped at Grande Provence. Both stories appear below.
Paarl and the wider Winelands: broaden your search if you prefer a particular landscape or venue. Compare privacy, access, accommodation and the wet-weather alternative before choosing from photographs alone.
Browse our Cape Town and Cape Winelands wedding venue reviews. Confirm current elopement availability, minimum spend and permitted guest numbers directly with each venue.

2. Decide on a legal or symbolic ceremony
Decide early whether you will legally marry in South Africa or complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here. A symbolic celebration gives you freedom over the setting, but does not itself create a legal marriage.
For a legal ceremony, book an authorised marriage officer and ask for a written checklist tailored to your nationalities, residence and previous marital status. Confirm documents, witness arrangements, where the ceremony can legally take place, registration and the certificate you will need back home.
Foreign couples should also check recognition and any certification or legalisation requirements with the relevant authorities in their home country. Start with the South African High Commission’s guidance for foreign couples, then confirm the current requirements with your marriage officer. Avoid building travel plans around an assumed paperwork turnaround.
3. Plan for the season, light and a weather alternative
Think about how you want the day to feel: warm evenings, green vineyards, quieter accommodation or an indoor setting with a view. Ask your venue what its grounds look like in your chosen month, and discuss ceremony timing with your photographer before booking the schedule.
A beautiful outdoor location still needs a workable alternative for rain, wind or heat. Reserve a sheltered ceremony space, allow time to move indoors and choose shoes that work on grass or gravel. A mountain or coastal portrait plan should have an accessible backup.
We recommend scheduling the separate couple shoot around flattering light and a practical route. Keep some flexibility in your stay where possible; an outdoor session depends on conditions.
Cape Town rainfall and daylight by month
Compare the seasons when choosing your elopement date, then use the daylight hours to start planning your ceremony and couple portraits.
| Month | Average rainfall (mm) | Approx. sunrise | Approx. sunset |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9.6 | 05:50 | 20:00 |
| February | 10.6 | 06:20 | 19:40 |
| March | 13.1 | 06:45 | 19:05 |
| April | 41.4 | 07:10 | 18:25 |
| May | 63.1 | 07:30 | 17:55 |
| June | 89.0 | 07:50 | 17:45 |
| July | 81.2 | 07:50 | 17:55 |
| August | 73.0 | 07:25 | 18:15 |
| September | 44.1 | 06:45 | 18:35 |
| October | 29.0 | 06:05 | 19:00 |

Our split coverage leaves room for your wedding day and a separate two-hour Cape Town or Winelands couple shoot.
4. Set a complete elopement budget
A smaller guest list can reduce catering and décor costs, but a destination elopement still has travel and accommodation costs. Spend on the parts that matter to you: a setting you love, a meaningful ceremony, excellent photography and video, or a memorable dinner.
- Flights, accommodation, airport transfers and local transport.
- Venue hire or minimum spend, dinner, flowers and hair and make-up.
- Marriage officer or celebrant, paperwork and any required certification.
- Photography and video, location access fees and agreed travel costs.
- A contingency for changing plans and optional honeymoon experiences.
Ask exactly what a venue’s “elopement package” includes and whether outside suppliers attract extra charges. ZaraZoo’s package below is photography and/or video coverage; it does not include your venue, planner, officiant, flights, accommodation or catering.

5. Choose a local team you can work with from abroad
A planner or a venue coordinator can simplify arrangements when you are booking across time zones. Clarify who handles ceremony logistics, supplier bookings, the weather decision and your transport. Photography timeline advice is useful, but it is a different service from full wedding planning.
Choose your photographer and videographer by reviewing complete wedding stories, then discuss your preferred balance of candid moments and guided portraits. With few or no guests, photographs and video become a way to share the experience with family afterwards.
Book the venue, marriage officer and creative team together around a confirmed date. Put hours, deliverables, payment terms, cancellation arrangements and travel charges in writing.
6. Check privacy, access and location permissions
A place that welcomes visitors may have separate requirements for a ceremony, professional photography or video. Ask the venue or land manager about access, permissions, fees and restrictions before putting a beach, vineyard or mountain location on your itinerary.
Check opening hours, walking distances, toilets, changing space and how private the setting will actually be. If drone footage matters to you, ask whether it is permitted and practical; it is not listed as an inclusion in the Essential video package.
Keep your ceremony and dinner close together. For the two-hour couple shoot, choose a compact route rather than losing the session to driving between distant locations.
7. Give yourselves time to arrive and settle in
We recommend arriving with a buffer before the wedding instead of planning a ceremony immediately after an international flight. Use that time to rest, meet your coordinator, check outfits and confirm the final arrangements.
Check entry requirements for your own passports with the official South African authorities before travelling. Book suitable transport and allow realistic travel time between Cape Town and your Winelands accommodation. Confirm baggage arrangements with your airline if travelling with wedding outfits.
Combine the elopement with a honeymoon at your own pace. A Winelands stay and time in Cape Town can work well together; avoid fitting every sightseeing stop into the wedding day.
8. Build a wedding day around the two of you
Six hours can tell a full intimate story when the locations are close: preparations, the ceremony, congratulations or champagne, portraits and the beginning of dinner. Agree what matters most so your coverage does not end before a moment you want recorded.
An example six-hour wedding schedule
- Hour 1: final preparations, outfits and personal details.
- Hour 2: finishing touches, a first look if wanted, and ceremony preparations.
- Hour 3: vows, ceremony and a toast.
- Hours 4–5: relaxed portraits around the venue and time together.
- Hour 6: dinner details and the start of your celebration.
This is a planning example, adjusted to your ceremony time and light. Your separate two-hour couple shoot can take place on another agreed day during your stay, in wedding outfits if you wish. Choose Cape Town’s scenery or a Cape Winelands setting and confirm the date, route and access in advance.

9. Take inspiration from two real Franschhoek elopements
Rod and Linda at La Residence
Rod and Linda travelled from the United States and chose an intimate elopement at La Residence at the start of their South African honeymoon. Their day centred on a private ceremony, couple portraits and a romantic dinner, with photography and video by ZaraZoo.
Their story shows how a destination elopement can feel personal without a large guest list or an elaborate programme. Read Rod and Linda’s La Residence wedding and explore our La Residence venue review.

Cape Town elopement questions
Can couples from overseas elope in South Africa?
You can plan a destination elopement here, choosing a legal ceremony with an authorised marriage officer or a symbolic celebration after legally marrying at home. Confirm requirements for your own circumstances before booking.
Is Cape Town or the Cape Winelands better?
Choose Cape Town for a city and coastal atmosphere, or Stellenbosch and Franschhoek for a wine-estate or country-hotel setting. Base the decision on your ceremony, accommodation and practical travel plans. You can use the separate couple shoot to explore a different setting.
Does the package include planning or a venue?
No. These are photography and video packages. Your venue, ceremony, accommodation and other suppliers are arranged separately.
How is the eight hours split?
Six consecutive hours cover your wedding, with a separate two-hour couple shoot in Cape Town or the Cape Winelands. The second session is arranged in advance during your stay; it is not eight consecutive hours on the wedding day.
Can we book only photography or only video?
Yes. Choose the service you want below. Video-only coverage records the separate couple session on video; the combined option includes both teams for both sessions.
